Chapter prose
The news broke before the sun. Matt Trakker’s civilian face—smiling, disarmed, hand raised in polite victory—adorned the front page of a tabloid left on the pit counter. The headline: "RACER OR SPY? TRUTH BEHIND MASK'S GOLDEN BOY." He barely paused, but the paper’s weight found his chest for the rest of the day. He called the morning briefing with a voice that only trembled once. Gloria Baker, all nerves tamped behind her steady gaze, slid the tabloid across the table to Bruce Sato. “VENOM’s getting creative,” she said, watching Matt’s reflection in the glossy page. “You think they’ll try something at the Grand Prix?” "I’d bet Thunderhawk’s engine on it," Bruce replied. “Miles Mayhem doesn’t leak information for free.” Matt nodded, his jaw set as the day’s schedule scrolled on the wall. Outside, the grandstands filled. The charity race was sold out—more cameras, more eyes, more targets. But bowing out would confirm the suspicions and let Mayhem own the narrative. Gloria nudged Matt’s arm: “We drive. We win clean. Let them chase shadows.” When the first engines screamed, Matt walked the grid in his civilian colors, one smile for the crowd, another for the pit crew. Gloria readied Shark two rows behind, helmet tucked under one arm, her reflection rippling in Thunderhawk’s chrome. Bruce checked telemetry, silent save for a steadying hand on Matt’s shoulder. On lap three, the trap revealed itself. A black-and-crimson muscle car—VENOM’s Manta—barreled out of a side gate, hurling a barrage of flares. The crowd gasped. Mayhem’s voice blared over the PA: “MASK’s secrets, MASK’s shame! Let’s see if Trakker’s as fast without his mask!” Matt swerved, Thunderhawk’s chassis shrieking as it transformed mid-turn. Cameras tracked every shimmer of armor locking into place; the crowd exploded in confusion and awe. Gloria, already shifting Shark into pursuit mode, cut through the chaos. She radioed, “Matt! Stay on the line—they want us to panic.” Miles Mayhem’s Manta gunned for Thunderhawk, firing stun blasts that stitched the air with orange. Matt kept control, one eye on the crowd, the other on the finish. “They want a spectacle,” he growled. “Let’s give them a race.” Gloria boxed Manta from the flank, drawing fire away from the crowd. Bruce’s voice crackled: “Heads up—Mayhem’s after public humiliation, not just a win.” Matt tapped Spectrum’s visor, voice cool. “We finish this as MASK—no casualties.” In the final lap, Thunderhawk and Manta rode neck-and-neck, metal gleaming under a hot sky. Mayhem spat, “Smile for the crowd, Trakker!” and slammed Thunderhawk’s fender. Matt gritted his teeth, kept the wheels inside the white line, then dropped the missile doors wide. Gloria pulled alongside, her car’s fins glinting. “Ready, Matt?” Together, they nudged Manta into a spin, sending Mayhem careening—but not crashing—into the infield. The crowd erupted. Matt crossed the finish line, helmet off, face visible through the smoke. He raised a hand: not quite victory, but a refusal to hide. After, as the cameras swarmed, Gloria slipped him his racing jacket. “Miles wanted a mask,” she said, soft. “You gave them Matt Trakker instead.” Matt smiled, tired but unbroken. “Let’s see him try that again.”
