Chapter prose
Cretaceous dusk cast its golden light over the tangled jungle, where the Valorian camp huddled in a shallow valley beside a slow, winding river. Questar stood on a low embankment, hands resting gently against the warm, pebbled hide of a young diplodocus. The dinosaur’s eyes, curious and ancient, blinked at him with a kind of trusting patience. Around them, the herd moved restlessly, their migration interrupted by the Valorians’ need for shelter and the threat of Rulon raids. “We’ll go at dawn,” Questar said, voice quiet. “No armor.” Serena approached, her pale gear dappled with reflected light. She carried her healer’s satchel, always prepared. “He’s strong enough to bear it,” she said softly, nodding to the diplodocus. “But you’re right. To force him is to become like them.” Questar’s mouth set in a thoughtful line. “We can’t chain them to our wars, Serena. Not the young.” From the treeline, Mind-Zei watched, his staff planted firmly in the earth. He nodded with slow approval, but his eyes searched the horizon—ever wary for the unnatural red glimmer of Rulon brain-boxes. The river cut through dense jungle, its surface a mirror of the deepening sky. As the Valorians began moving the herd to safer ground, distant shrieks echoed through the ferns. Then came the Rulons: Krulos astride a monstrous armored tyrannosaurus, its head bristling with cruel metal, followed by Rasp on a smaller, swifter carnivore. Laser fire split the dusk. “Scatter!” Questar called, as the Valorians scrambled to shield the dinosaurs. The herd surged clumsily toward the river, Serena racing alongside the young diplodocus. She pressed a gentle hand to its neck, calming its panic with whispered words. Rasp’s serpent grin flashed, and he raised a brain-box controller. “Now, little healer, let’s see you fix this!” Red beams lanced from the Rulon armaments, striking the water and hissing into steam. The young diplodocus stumbled, cornered at the muddy bank. Serena stepped between it and Rasp, her body a shield. “Stay back!” she shouted. “This one is not yours!” Rasp’s voice was a hiss, sharp and taunting. “They’re all ours, Valorian. The strong take!” Questar arrived, sliding down the embankment with a blue Valorian blaster drawn—but he hesitated, unwilling to fire near the panicked dinosaur. Krulos bellowed orders from atop his metal-clad tyrant, and Mind-Zei moved quietly through the chaos, his presence a calm in the storm. The young diplodocus, startled, splashed into the shallows. Rasp lunged to clamp the brain-box to its skull, but Serena intercepted him, knocking the device from his hand. For a moment—just a moment—his predatory eyes met hers, and he faltered. “Mercy is weakness!” he spat, but the words trembled. Serena seized the chance, guiding the diplodocus deeper into the river. Questar fired into the water, raising a curtain of spray that forced the Rulons back. Mind-Zei’s voice carried over the clash: “Not all battles are won by force!” Krulos glared, his command frustrated. “Retreat! For now!” The Rulons withdrew, their armored beasts thrashing away into the trees. On the far bank, Serena and the young diplodocus emerged, battered but free. Questar joined her, relief softening his face. “You risked everything,” he said quietly. Serena smiled, brushing mud from her hands. “So did he.” Night settled, the river calm once more. The Valorians regrouped, the herd safe for another day. But Questar knew the Rulons would return—and that their resolve, not their weapons, would decide whether peace had a place in this new world.

Valorians path: Quest refuses to armor a young diplodocus for war, then Krulos raids the herd at dusk. Serena’s serenity and Rasp’s brain-box collide in a river crossing that was supposed to be a migration, not a battle.
