Chapter prose
Long before time-travel and dinosaurs, the Rulons were not yet the scourge of worlds. On their distant homeworld—a mosaic of steaming jungles, acid lakes, and crumbling stone towers—diversity was law. Frog-folk, serpentine slitherers, and beetle-armored colossi lived in a fragile union, each species guarding territory and tradition. The ruling council, once a triad of the wisest, became slow, then paralyzed by the endless debates of three great races. Among them, Krulos was born to the Swamp Clans, a runt but clever, too clever for his own caste’s liking. He watched as border feuds flared, and the council’s edicts dissolved into feeble compromise. Rulon science was mighty: they tamed storms, built machines that hovered above the fens, and reached for the stars. But every invention was shackled by the council’s endless, careful vote. Progress stalled. The strongest Rulons resented the slow, the slow mistrusted the strong. Krulos, hungry for certainty, gathered like-minds in shadowed workshops. He saw how the venomous snake-people could strike with precision, and how the beetle-armored could withstand almost anything. What if one mind—his—could command all their gifts? He built the first control device: a clunky helmet meant for beetle warriors, fused with a serpent's neural glands. The council forbade it. Krulos installed it on himself. Under the brain-box’s influence, Krulos felt the thoughts of those around him. Not empathy, but domination: he could sense, then bend, the will of lesser Rulons. At first, his power was secret—a test on beetle drones here, a whisper in a snake-kin there. But ambition makes itself known. When the council discovered the experiments, Krulos unleashed his followers, brain-boxed and loyal, upon the chamber. The war that followed was short, brutal, and decisive. The council was shattered. Krulos declared himself Supreme Commander. "Harmony," he declared, "is unity of mind!" Many Rulons submitted, cowed by power. Others resisted: some vanished into the jungles, others sabotaged brain-box factories, but the new order marched onward. The Rulons became a conquering people, bound by technology—every dissenting voice drowned out by the red glow of the brain-box. Science no longer paused for debate. It ran, unchained, across the stars, searching for new resources, new species to bend. Yet not all Rulons were blind to what had been lost. Even among his generals, fear lurked behind forced loyalty. Rasp, the cleverest of the serpentine, learned to serve and survive, but never fully trusted the box. Deep in the swamps, a memory lingered: a world where ideas clashed, but freedom was possible. So when the Rulons discovered the Valorians and their peaceful ways, Krulos saw only weakness. But in the eyes of the youngest Rulons, sometimes there flickered a doubt—a longing for the forgotten council fires. Thus, the Rulons became what they are: warlike not by nature, but by the ambition of one, and the silence of many.
