Chapter prose
The rain had a way of making Adrilankha look honest. By honest, I mean it showed every stain, every uneven stone, every House's coat-of-arms running in the gutter. It also made my boots squelch, but that's not why I was nervous. No, that was because Aliera e'Kieron and Cawti had just met, and they were both looking at each other with the kind of polite appraisal you usually reserve for expensive poisons. Aliera stood in the entry hall of my—well, my borrowed—manor. She was tall even for a Dragaeran, her House Dragon cloak fresh from some noble quarrel. Cawti, in contrast, was just as sharp, but in that coil-spring way that means you know where every knife is hidden, including her own. Their eyes met, and I saw a flicker. Not hostility, not exactly. More like two fencers seeing if the other will misstep first. I tried to speak, but Loiosh, my familiar, hissed a warning in my ear. "Stay out of it, boss." Cawti broke the silence. "You know, Vlad said you once burned down a library to make a point." Aliera arched a thin eyebrow. "I'd burn down a palace if the point is good enough." Loiosh: “Ask her about the time she lost a Morganti blade. That’s always good for a few laughs.” I kept my mouth shut. Cawti smiled, the one that means she’s not actually smiling. "I hear palaces burn slower than you’d think." Aliera returned it, green eyes sharp. "If you’re patient." It was the sort of exchange that might pass for civil, between two people who both know how to kill and still choose to talk. But it wasn't about violence. Not really. It was about me, and the way my life kept tripping over the politics of Houses and the politics of the street. Later, I found them in the kitchen. Rain drummed on the window. Cawti was peeling an onion, Aliera hovering at the table, watching her hands. Loiosh perched on the mantel, tail twitching. They were comparing scars—literal and not. Cawti, the revolutionary, who wanted to fix the Empire or at least punch it in the face. Aliera, the noble, who’d burn it down but only for her own reasons. It wasn’t friendship. Not yet. But it was respect, the kind that comes from recognizing someone who could, under the right circumstances, be an ally or an enemy. Maybe both, on the same day. Loiosh cocked his head. "If those two ever join forces, boss, you’d better sleep with a Morganti blade under your pillow." I grinned. "I already do." The rivalry would stay in the shadows—furtive, subtle, and sharp as a whispered insult. But in Adrilankha, that’s the only way anything interesting ever happens.
