Home isn’t quite home anymore.

Alex, sun-browned teen in faded T-shirt and jeans, stands at the edge of the dusty trailer park lot at golden hour, staring at where the old Starfighter cabinet once stood. A new, darker arcade machine sits in its place. Maggie, light brown hair, summer tan, stands at his side. The trailer court glows with late-day light; Centauri, a round man in a loud shirt, is just stepping from his strange car.

Chapter prose
Alex Rogan stepped off Centauri’s battered car, boots crunching on the gravel lot of the Starlite Starbrite. Golden sun made everything glow: the faded trailers, Maggie’s long hair, his own hands trembling at his sides. He'd begged for leave, just for a day home, and the air tasted of dust and grass and hope. But something was off. The Starfighter arcade cabinet, the one that had changed his life, was gone. In its place stood a hulking, midnight-blue machine: "KO-DAN COMMANDER" pulsed in neon, its screen flickering with harsh, geometric ships. Maggie saw him staring. "It just showed up. Some guy in a suit wheeled it in yesterday. Weird, right?" Alex felt a buzzing under his skin. Centauri, leaning on his cane and feigning an old man’s weariness, squinted at the game. "Not my handiwork, my boy. But I know Ko-Dan circuitry when I smell it." Alex circled the cabinet. The 'quarter slot' was rimmed in alien script. The joysticks were too smooth, the colors too cold. Maggie pressed a button; the screen spat static. For a heartbeat, Alex thought he caught his own face flickering among the blocky ships—then it was just a game again. "I’ll handle it," Centauri said, but Alex already had his hand on the joystick. "No!" Centauri hissed. But Alex fed it a coin. The screen drew him in: ships, codes, a stutter of static, then— A whine rose from the cabinet. The trailer park’s TVs flickered. Centauri barked something in a language Maggie couldn’t follow. The machine’s screen split: a Ko-Dan officer, all sharp angles and bruised purple, stared out. "Target located. Starfighter Alex Rogan. Terminate if possible." Maggie grabbed Alex’s wrist. "Is this—real?" "Very real," Centauri said, peeling off his disguise’s sunglasses. "They’re listening. On Earth. Through this." Alex backed away, heart pounding. The cabinet’s screen spat out schematics—his Gunstar, his home, everything he’d tried to protect. Centauri bent, popped open a maintenance panel, and swore. "It’s transmitting. They know you’re here." "Can you shut it down?" Maggie asked. Centauri grinned. "With a bit of help." The three formed a wedge: Alex at the joystick, Centauri groping in the wiring, Maggie on lookout. The cabinet’s speakers blared Ko-Dan code. Lights in the trailer park began to strobe, as if the whole grid was hijacked. "They're coming," Centauri warned. Alex punched the joystick, triggering a surge on the screen. The image of the Ko-Dan officer fizzled. Centauri yanked wires, sparks flying. Maggie yanked the power cord, and the cabinet went dark. Everything was still. The streetlights calmed. Maggie’s breath punched out of her. Alex locked eyes with her—relief, fear, the weird intimacy of fighting a secret war in their own backyard. Centauri straightened, face softened. "That’s one plot foiled, but they’ll try again. Next time, perhaps not with a cabinet." Alex looked up at the sky, stars already appearing in the dusk. "I guess I’m still fighting. Even here." Maggie squeezed his hand. "We both are." And as the last rays caught the battered trailers, the three of them stood together—battle-worn, but not beaten. The trailer court was safe for one more night.
