Chapter prose
The Soyokaze drifted near the neutral zone, its battered hull reflecting distant stars. Captain Justy Ueki Tylor lounged in his command chair, humming some tuneless melody. The air on the bridge was thick with anticipation—word had come that a Raalgon patrol was prowling close by. Lieutenant Yuriko Star stood at her station, sharp blue eyes flicking over readouts, tension in her rigid shoulders. Yamamoto clutched his clipboard as if it were a lifeline, glancing between Tylor and Yuriko, unsure who to follow. "The Raalgon are making a move, sir," Yuriko reported, voice crisp. "They're hailing us. Should we respond?" Tylor grinned, eyes twinkling. "Why not? Maybe they're just lonely." Before anyone could object, the comms screen flashed, revealing Azalyn Goza herself. The young empress sat poised among shimmering banners, her golden eyes narrowing at the sight of Tylor's relaxed posture. "United Planets vessel," she announced, "this sector is under Raalgon control. Leave at once, or face consequences." Tylor blinked, then shrugged. "You know, space is pretty, but it's even better with company. Maybe we could—" Yuriko shot him a glare, but Azalyn raised a hand. "You mock the empire, Captain." Tylor smiled apologetically. "Not at all! I just thought a little conversation might be nice." Behind Tylor, Harumi entered quietly, her presence softening the room. She offered Tylor a cup of tea, her gentle gaze meeting his for a moment. He winked in thanks, but the tension on the bridge thickened as Raalgon warships appeared on the sensors. Yamamoto sputtered, "Captain, they're preparing to fire! We must follow protocol!" Tylor sipped his tea. "Maybe, or maybe we do something unexpected. Yuriko, prepare to send our favorite song across all frequencies." Yuriko hesitated, then nodded, fingers flying over controls. Moments later, the strains of an old Earth melody echoed through space, reaching even the Raalgon ships. On Azalyn's bridge, the imperial officers looked at each other in confusion. Azalyn stared at her screen, caught between annoyance and fascination. "What is this?" she demanded. Tylor's voice drifted over the comm. "A peace offering. No need for fighting today." A long moment passed. The Raalgon ships held position, guns primed but silent. Azalyn studied Tylor, her resolve flickering. "You are infuriating," she said at last, "but... intriguing." With a gesture, she signaled her fleet to stand down. Yuriko exhaled, relief and disbelief mingling on her face. Tylor grinned wider, spinning in his chair. Later, as the Soyokaze resumed its meandering patrol, Harumi found Tylor gazing at the stars, a gentle smile on his lips. "Was that luck, or something else?" she asked quietly. He shrugged, eyes warm. "Maybe it's just the universe having a sense of humor." Behind them, Yamamoto muttered to himself, updating his log and shaking his head. On the edge of war, luck and chaos had triumphed once again—for now.
