Chapter prose
Manny awoke to the screech of incoming trains and the sharp scent of rain on concrete. His head throbbed. He blinked, vision swimming, and saw fluorescent lights flickering above a nearly empty subway platform. On the far wall, a glossy development brochure hung from a vending rack. The cover glistened unnaturally, its skyline not quite matching reality: buildings were too straight, too clean, a syrupy river of glass and white stone replacing the familiar grime of the city he almost knew. He stood, the tailored jacket heavy on his shoulders, as if he’d worn it through storms. His reflection swayed in the plastic of the brochure, sharp brown eyes and all. A pulse raced through the tiles, a heartbeat not his own. As he stepped forward, the brochure shuddered. It slid from the rack, unfolding in midair. Its pages rippled, and from its glossy folds, an elegant woman emerged—her face shifting, twisting with each blink into a collage of smiling realtors and sterile models. Her eyes were bottomless, a void that tugged at his edges. “Welcome to your city,” she purred, voice dissolving into static. “Don’t you want it improved?” Manny’s mouth went dry. He backed toward the edge of the platform. His mind sparkled with fragments: subway maps, street murals, the taste of corner-store coffee. He remembered nothing personal, but the city pulsed in his veins. A rumble announced another arrival—the train, or something more. Down the stairs burst Brooklyn Thomason, boots ringing on metal, her afro haloed by the platform’s sickly light. She took in the scene instantly: Manny, staring down a thing made of brochures; the Enemy, already here and wearing the promise of progress. “Late to the party, but still crashing it,” Brooklyn called, voice warm and brash. “Who’s your new friend, Manny?” The Enemy’s face flickered, turning toward Brooklyn. “This city wants order. Unity. Clean lines. You resist.” Brooklyn squared her shoulders, leather jacket creaking. “This city wants to be itself. Messy, loud, alive. And we don’t take kindly to outsiders drawing up its soul on a pamphlet.” Manny felt power crackle between them, like a third rail coming alive. The Enemy’s image began to warp, the brochure-woman dissolving at the edges, leaking slick white like spilled glue. She hissed, lashes lengthening into spindles. “You can’t fight what’s already begun. The platform is mine.” Brooklyn stepped forward, planting her boots. “You might have your foot in the door, but you don’t know the code.” Manny found his voice, hoarse but steady. “This city’s magic doesn’t unify for strangers. You can’t brochure us into one pretty box.” The Enemy lunged, pages fluttering like wings, but the platform trembled—some deep, guttural groan of steel and city. Brooklyn and Manny, shoulder to shoulder, braced for impact. And in that moment, Manny understood: the city’s heartbeat wasn’t just under his skin. It was in the air between them, a current that could throw back anything trying to smooth it over. Above, rain hammered the street grates. Down below, magic and memory collided, and the city itself refused to be sold.

Awakenings path: A borough avatar wakes on a subway platform to find the Enemy already wearing a development brochure. Another borough arrives late. New York’s magic is local, loud, and allergic to being unified on someone else’s terms.
