Chapter prose
Moonlight slanted across the empty Main Street of Clairton, painting Rom’s silver-plated armor in cold fire as he waited in the quiet beside the Clark home. He did not sleep, but tonight he stood unmoving, listening for the faintest echo of Dire Wraiths among the cricket-song and the distant laughter from a few houses still awake. Brandy Clark emerged from her back door, clutching something close—Polaroid print paper, edges curled, the chemical gloss catching yellow porchlight. Her face held a strange mix of hope and dread. "Rom," she said, breathless, “You have to see this.” She held out the photograph: her Aunt Lila, dead two years, standing beside the Tilt-A-Whirl at the county fair—yesterday’s date stamped in awkward red in the corner. He took it gently, the armored gauntlet impossibly careful. "This is not possible, Brandy." Tears trembled at the corners of her eyes. "I know. I saw her—at the fair. She waved at me. But... I thought I was seeing things." Rom’s sensors scanned the glossy rectangle. A shimmer of alien energy twined through the paper, nearly lost beneath halide and ink. "This is Wraithcraft. Their infiltration deepens." They walked together to the garage, where Brandy’s father kept his old darkroom. The scent of chemicals lingered, thick and sweet. Rom set the Polaroid on the battered bench. "Stand back. If the evil is here, the Neutralizer will expose it." "She was kind," Brandy whispered. "She taught me to ride." Rom leveled the weapon—blocky and severe, its surface swallowing light. The trigger felt heavy as betrayal. He fired. A bolt of incandescent energy lanced across the photo. The image buckled, its colors blurring, and from the printed smile erupted a keening, inhuman shriek. The air tore open, the photograph swelling and twisting until a shape crawled from its own paper reflection—Lila’s face, but stretched, hungry, mouth opening too wide. Limbs unfolded with a wet, snapping sound, flesh flickering between memory and monstrous crimson. Brandy stumbled back, horror stifling her shout. The thing in her aunt’s skin reached for her, nails curling into talons. Rom stepped between them, the Neutralizer roaring again. This time the light struck true—human mask melting, the Wraithqueen’s minion screaming as energy ripped away the stolen flesh. Where it fell, only ash and the scent of ozone remained. Brandy pressed herself against the wall, eyes wide. Rom knelt, his massive form shrinking in the shadow of her fear. "I am sorry, Brandy Clark. The Wraiths’ cruelty knows no boundary." She wiped her eyes. "I brought her back because I missed her. I let them in." Rom’s voice was gentle static, the ache of metal yearning to comfort. "You did not invite the monster. You only loved the memory. That is not sin." They stood in the ruined darkroom as moonlight pooled silver on metal and on tears. Outside, the laughter from the houses faded, and Rom watched the dark, knowing the war was far from over.
Original idea

In Clairton, Brandy Clark brings Rom a Polaroid that should not exist: her late aunt smiling at a county fair that happened yesterday. When Rom fires the Neutralizer at the photograph itself, the image screams—and something wearing her aunt's face steps out of the darkroom.
