Chapter prose
Rain beaded on the warped polyglass over Daikoku’s Old Sector as Yasako adjusted her AR glasses, the city’s digital haze flickering at the edges of her vision. The afternoon had faded to a gray, insistent drizzle, and the world was a blend of old concrete and ghostly overlays, only half-visible to those who dared look. Kyūichirō moved beside her, silent except for the soft crunch of his boots. He was older than the rumor-mongering children who once haunted these alleys, but the tension in his jaw was adolescent: the city still scared him. Yasako wondered, briefly, if she would ever outrun the feeling herself. A message flickered in the fog. Fumie’s handwriting: “Rumor confirmed—‘Copycat Shadow’ seen at 4th St. Park. Watch your glasses!” Yasako hesitated. The digital ghost stories always started the same: a shadow that lagged in the AR overlay, then suddenly matched your every move. It was said to copy more than just gestures, but no one could say what else. They found the park empty. A few rusted swings creaked, digital vines crawling unseen up their chains. Yasako’s AR view rippled—then she caught a glimpse: a child-shaped shadow standing by the jungle gym. It moved, just as she blinked, always a fraction of a second behind her own motion. “Is that the Copycat?” Kyūichirō whispered. His voice was thin, uncertain. Yasako nodded, taking a step forward. The shadow lingered, then, curiously, its head turned toward her. Not a child’s curiosity—something patient, and old. Suddenly, a crisp voice cut across the park. Isako stepped from the mist, her dark hair tied back, her AR interface glinting in the digital light. “You’re both late,” she said. Yasako bristled. She’d half expected Isako to appear—where there were secrets, she was never far. “The shadow’s not what you think. It’s not copying—it’s collecting.” Isako’s eyes flicked to the playground, where the shadow flickered. “It hunts for lost code. Children’s glasses, left behind. Ghosts of memory.” Yasako shivered, remembering stories of vanished AR data, forgotten play, friends lost to time. “Why show itself now?” she asked. Isako’s face was unreadable. “Because some memories won’t stay buried. And some want to be found.” A sudden pulse—Yasako’s glasses dimmed, the shadow lunging close, its digital outline flowing into hers. For a moment, Yasako felt a chill—an echo of playground laughter, the sting of tears, the weight of childhood she carried still. Kyūichirō reached for her hand, steadying her. “Yasako—are you okay?” She breathed in, slow, grounding herself in the rain and the now. The shadow hesitated, then retreated, fading into static. The playground was empty once more. “Is it gone?” Kyūichirō asked. Isako shook her head. “Nothing here is ever really gone.” Yasako caught Isako’s gaze—something soft, almost regretful, flickered there. The city’s secrets pressed close, as tangible as the rain. “Let’s go,” Yasako said. The past would never leave Daikoku. But she could choose what to carry, and what to let go.
Original idea

影 (Kage) path: Yūko Okonogi and Kyūichirō chase a digital rumor through Daikoku’s old sectors—a shadow that copies children’s glasses. Isako knows the rumor’s true name. Keep it eerie and urban, not gore.
