Chapter prose
Daikoku City wore its digital skin like a second, invisible face. Yasako stood at the base of the old brick building—the Coil Investigation Agency—early afternoon light filtering through the clouds. The analog street felt solid beneath her feet, but through her AR glasses, a thick, wavering distortion covered the office doorway: a semi-opaque polygonal shimmer that pulsed with faint, unreadable glyphs. Her reflection in the glass was familiar, but the overlay twisted it, and the agency’s sign flickered between its usual logo and a string of fragmented kanji. Fumie jogged up beside her, hoodie pulled tight against the breeze, eyes flicking between physical reality and digital trouble. "Locked out again?" Fumie asked, glancing at the swirling overlay. "It's different this time," Yasako replied, voice tinged with worry. "The space isn’t just glitched—it's gone." They circled the perimeter; Daichi lumbered out from a side alley, his work vest bristling with sensor tools. “Analog says nothing’s wrong,” he grumbled. Yasako peered closer. The overlay space was thick, like the air before a summer storm. She reached out, fingers brushing the digital veil, and a faint ripple passed through the mesh. A notification pinged in her glasses: ACCESS RESTRICTED—LAST WILL DETECTED. A chill threaded down her spine. Last-will fragments were rare: digital ghosts left behind by people, encoded with their final wishes, sometimes holding vital data—or secrets best forgotten. “Someone left a lock here on purpose,” Haraken murmured, voice soft, eyes shadowed. He adjusted his glasses, scanning the overlay. Isako appeared on the curb, arms crossed, a silent observer. Yasako knew she’d come; nothing like this happened in Daikoku’s digital underworld without drawing Isako’s curiosity. Yasako focused, launching a handshake protocol. The shimmer condensed, coalescing into a translucent silhouette: a woman’s figure, adult, her features blurred by pixel noise. "Who seeks entrance?" The voice was muted but resonant, carrying the sadness of long memory. "I’m Yūko Okonogi. This is our agency," Yasako replied. "We need access." The apparition wavered. "This place preserves my promise until my conditions are fulfilled." Fumie stepped forward, her tone gentle. "What do you need?" The fragment’s eyes—two faint points of light—fixed on Yasako. "A memory… an apology." Yasako’s heart pounded. She thought of her own lost chances—words left unsaid, wounds unhealed. Carefully, she asked, "To whom?" The fragment hesitated. "To my daughter. I hid her truth here. I cannot leave until it’s spoken. Will you carry these words?" Yasako nodded, her own voice trembling. "I will." A rush of digital wind swept down the street, rattling the overlay. The fragment’s form compressed into a glowing data-token, hovering before Yasako. She reached out, taking it gently. The lock on the digital door evaporated, revealing the familiar warmth of their cluttered office beyond—stacks of files, AR maps glowing softly, the promise of ordinary work. Isako’s gaze lingered on Yasako, unreadable. "You carry other people’s burdens too easily," she said quietly. Yasako smiled, weary but determined. "Sometimes, it’s the only way forward." Inside, the team gathered. The cost of memory, Yasako thought, was never just your own. But as the agency’s door opened in both worlds, she felt—for a moment—at home on the threshold.
Original idea

場所 (Basho) path: The Coil Investigation Agency is locked out of its own office by a space that only exists in the overlay. Yūko has to negotiate with a last-will fragment while the analog street looks perfectly ordinary.
