Washed up on an unknown shore, hope and fear rise together.

Wreckage of the ship and driftwood litter the sand, twisted pines line the background, and distant waves roll in under a cold sky. Hakaze's white and blue robe is soaked and Mahiro is kneeling over her while Yoshino sits nearby, shivering. The ruined torii gate is just visible beyond.

Chapter prose
Mahiro awoke to the rasp of sand scraping his cheek and the salt sting of sea air. He coughed, spitting out brine, forcing burning lungs to drag in air. Gray dawn pressed down with a cool, merciless light, and he blinked, memory of the storm lashing their ship still echoing in his bones. Somewhere to his left, the sea hissed against the rocks, and beyond that— A voice. "Mahiro?" He sat up sharply, eyes scanning. Yoshino, shivering, knees drawn to his chest, looked battered but alive. "You all right?" Yoshino nodded, though his eyes were shadowed. He pushed damp hair from his forehead, gaze drifting past Mahiro. "Hakaze?" Mahiro followed his glance. Hakaze Kusaribe lay farther up the shore, one arm flung out, the hem of her white-and-blue robe darkened by seawater. Mahiro stumbled to her side, kneeling. She was pale, her lips tinged with blue, but her eyes fluttered open as he touched her shoulder. "You made it," she rasped, relief and surprise mingling in her tone. She tried to push herself up, but Mahiro steadied her. "Easy. We’re all in one piece." The three of them sat in silence for a moment, battered by exhaustion and the raw knowledge that whatever fate they had escaped at sea, a new challenge awaited on this unfamiliar shore. The beach was hemmed by twisted pines and jagged rocks. A ruined torii gate, half-swallowed by sand and moss, marked a path inland. Yoshino stood, scanning the horizon. "We should find shelter. If Samon’s followers know we’re alive, they’ll come." Mahiro bristled, clenching his fists. "Let them come. I’m not leaving until I find out what this place is." Hakaze managed a faint, ironic smile. "This island...it’s not on any map. The Tree’s power distorts space. We could be anywhere. Or nowhere." Mahiro looked at her, frustration warring with fear. "So, we’re trapped? Again?" She shook her head. "Not forever. But magic is weak here. We need to be careful." A gull shrieked overhead. Yoshino stepped past the torii, peering into the tangled woods. "I see something—a structure. Maybe a shrine." Mahiro exchanged a glance with Hakaze. She nodded, leaning on him as they rose. The sand sucked at their feet as they crossed the threshold, the air thick with the scent of pine and something older, stranger—like dust and old spells. Within the trees, they found the battered remains of a Shinto shrine. The roof had half-collapsed, but it offered shelter. Inside, a broken mirror glimmered on the altar, ringed by faded paper talismans. Hakaze paused, tracing her fingers over the mirror’s frame. "Magic lingers here," she said softly. "We might be able to use it." Mahiro watched her, jaw set. "To get off this island? Or to fight back?" She looked at him—tired, resolute. "Both. But it will take time." Yoshino crouched near the entrance, eyes scanning the shadows. "Then we’d better hope we have time. If Samon sent anyone after us—" Mahiro interrupted, voice low and dangerous. "Let him send his whole clan. We’re not giving up. Not after coming this far." Hakaze’s hand trembled on the mirror, but her eyes burned with new resolve. Outside, the golden light of morning crept across the sand, illuminating the ruined gate—a silent promise of both danger and hope. Together, the three exiles prepared for whatever storm would come next.
